Governor David A. Paterson announced in Brooklyn yesterday that $214,596 of the $10 million Brownfield Opportunities Grant is slated for the United Puerto Rican Association of Sunset Park (UPROSE).  UPROSE will complete a nomination for a 475-acre area with over 50 potential brownfield sites that are located in Sunset Park, The Business Council’s Capital Business Blog reported.

The neighborhood organization plans to conduct a planning process to involve the community. This grand continues UPROSE’s Brownfield Opportunity Areas Program (BOA), which has since 2005 worked with community stakeholders and regulatory agencies to identify and redevelop strategic sites in a manner consistent with the priorities of the community.

Established in 1966, UPROSE has a longstanding history of community organization in Sunset Park. In recent years, it has focused particularly on environmental justice issues. UPROSE’s Youth Justice Fellows in July held a press conference to announce its four new hybrid buses. Municipal Art Society of New York also recently featured two teens from UPROSE in a three part series on the role of youth in planning.
