A Brooklyn principal has reprimanded a Sunset Park science teacher for selling to students copies of a book that purports to “recognize and combat satanic attacks; and recognize those serving Satan, and bring them to Jesus Christ,” the New York Daily News reported.
Sixth-grade science teacher Steven Arizmendi allegedly offered “He Came to Set the Captive Free” for $5 apiece to students at Junior High 220 in Sunset Park, the Daily News reported. Arizmendi also loaned copies of the book to students.
The book, which turns on the conversion of “Elaine” from a devotee of Satan to one of Jesus Christ, bills itself as a how-to handbook to recognize and combat “the many Satanists who regularly infiltrate and destroy Christian churches.”
The News did not go into specifics about the reprimand.
“He has been instructed that he cannot hand out material that hasn’t been previously approved,” said Education Department spokeswoman Margie Feinberg told the Daily News.
