(Better) Update: Sunset Park Stabbing
The stabbing that took place last Sunday, Oct. 4, does not appear to have been gang related. There have been several misunderstandings and errors on this incident, including my own, here and here. The Post and Village Voice have also reported on Sunset Park’s most recent homicide. The following is the version offered by the 72nd Precinct at the Community Council meeting of October 12th:

Fire on 5th Avenue Burns Lunch
It was quite the hubbub on 5th Avenue today when two firetrucks descended upon a fire in a basement apartment on 5th Avenue at 44nd Street. Turns out the cry came over nothing more than burnt lunch, according to local Herb Hartel. Around 4pm, a half dozen firemen left the apartment rather more languidly then they went in. No one was injured, and it appears the incident left the apartment undamaged.
It may have been a false alarm, but it’s heartening to know that Ladder 114 stands ready to “Tally Ho” when bigger flames flare.

A Star is Born in Sunset Park
The Rolls Royce wasn’t Sunset Park’s only star-studded moment on Sunday. Locals gathered around the see the action when a team started rolling on what appeared to be a music video. This crew hasn’t made a name for themselves yet, but it drew a crowd in the minutes before the sun went down. Check out a clip. Be warned, it’s PG-13.

Duane Reade has made its debut, and now settled into its shiny plate-glass storefront on 5th Ave. Best View in Brooklyn gives a great description of the space, and a resident’s viewpoint on how it compares in price and feel to longer term spots like Ike’s Party Party and the Mini Max.
“I wonder what’s gonna happen to all the little mom and pops,” said local Stacy Mosher, who said she has gone out of her way to shop elsewhere.

Will Ferrell Aids Cop Injured in Sunset Park
A little Sunset Park levity, from the New York Post:
Funnyman Will Ferrell — famous for a “Saturday Night Live” skit in which he plays a cowbell-obsessed musician — rushed to the aid of one of the band’s pipers when he was hit by a tree branch in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Cemetery.
Ferrell was in Sunset Park filming “The Other Guys,” which also stars Eva Mendez and Samuel L. Jackson.

Also, many thanks to Annie Byrnes who pointed out that I had spelled the funnyman’s name wrong in my headline. The perils of quick writing and absentee editors.

Cyclist Hit by Car Walks Away Unharmed
It was a great relief yesterday when police and firetrucks arrived to find that a collision between a cyclist and a car dinged the bike, but missed the rider.
The accident created quite the hubbub on the corner of 39th Street and 4th Ave a little after 5pm. Neighborhood teens and churchgoers gathered on the southwest corner to as paramedics and police spoke with the young man on the bike, who was unhurt.
Witnesses said that he had slowed at the corner, but then rolled into the street against the walk light. The Honda Element came east up 39th street on a green light and clipped the bicycle’s front wheel. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Unable to contact a parent, paramedics took the rider to the hospital. They expected to release him as soon as a parent or guardian arrived to take him home.
